Ho appena finito la lettura di questo romanzo con un cliffhanger da paura… e sono in estasi!
Con Fable of happiness esordisce la nuova serie dark contemporary di Pepper Winters. Qui in Italia l’autrice è famosa per la serie Indebted, che io avevo iniziato ma non proseguito perché non ero riuscita a farmi conquistare dai personaggi e dalle premesse della storia in generale. Tuttavia, quando ho letto la trama di Fable of happiness è scattato un interruttore nella mia testa… e il mio istinto ha fatto centro!
In queste pagine l’autrice ci fa viaggiare negli intricati irraggiungibili segreti di Fable, una dimora sfarzosa, ricca di marmi e sete, nascosta e irraggiungibile. Una casa nel bosco, un mausoleo di segreti e tana di un uomo che è più animale che umano. Kassen vive da solo, sopravvive alle intemperie e ai ricordi del passato da tanto tempo, ormai. Non conosce altra vita, non desidera altra vita, se non quella in cui può correre libero nella foresta, indisturbato, lontano dalla civiltà, dalle bugie, i tradimenti e le violenze. Kassen è stato maledetto alla nascita.
Al contrario, Gemma è stata benedetta in ogni aspetto della sua vita. Nel lavoro, nella famiglia, nelle amicizie, nel successo. In tutto, tranne che in amore.
Gemma è un’esperta scalatrice professionista, e alla ricerca di un posto vergine da conquistare con la forza dei suoi muscoli e la sua testardaggine, per caso oltrepassa i confini della proprietà di Kassen. Quel mostro selvaggio che sanguina come lei, ma che esplode in una rabbia che di umano non ha nulla, la fa sua prigioniera. Non può lasciarla libera, perché adesso Gemma sa della sua esistenza. Non esiste alcuna scelta: o la morte o la sottomissione…

Una scrittura capace di imprigionarti e trascinarti tra la vegetazione, le rocce, il fango e l’oscurità dell’animo umano. Ho amato ogni dettaglio. Le descrizioni ricche dell’ambiente, del contesto che mi hanno fatto sentire persa in una foresta e al sicuro in una prigione autogestita. I ricordi che offrono uno squarcio traumatico e destabilizzante di ciò che era Fable un tempo. Uno scorcio su chi era Kassen prima di tutto, e prima che Gemma lo trovasse. E un ritratto psicologico puntuale dei protagonisti che lascia senza fiato.
Gemma e Kassen sono esplosivi. Sono solitudini che collidono. Sono odio e paura e coraggio e desiderio. Gemma è una donna forte, indipendente, generosa ma anche astuta: vuole vivere, vuole tornare dalla sua famiglia, e coglie ogni occasione per conquistarsi la libertà che quell’uomo di cui non conosce neppure i nome le ha tolto.
Lui non l’ha privata solo delle ali. L’ha privata della solitudine dell’anima, dell’aridezza della passione, della paura di sentirsi diversa.
E Kassen… dico solo che è entrato di diritto trai gli hero preferiti del mio cuore. Un uomo tormentato, crudele, sopravvissuto a stento alle barbarie umane, che si scontra con nuove emozioni che non comprende. O forse, che comprende molto bene, solo che non riesce ad accettarle. Morte, violenza, prevaricazione sono le uniche armi che ha, e le usa anche contro Gemma.
Ma se lui è il più forte fisicamente, il carnefice, colui che detta le regole… basta uno sguardo, una parola gentile, un tocco intimo di Gemma per far sì che Kassen diventi il prigioniero, sottomesso di un qualcosa di umano e intrinseco e viscerale che non riesce ad abbattere. Una pace e un silenzio assoluto dopo anni di incubi e tormenti.
Una coppia mostruosa. Passionale. Violenta. Viva. Eppure inaccettabile. Mi hanno catturato la testa e la pancia, non avvertivo tali vibes potenti dai tempi di Aleksandra e Henri della queen Chiara Cilli.
Con questo libro primo della serie, l’autrice calamita l’attenzione nel migliore dei modi, ponendo le giuste domande per lasciare il lettore con il desiderio impellente di sapere ogni cosa, in bilico tra luce e buio, tra ciò che è morale e ciò che non lo è. Assolutamente da leggere!!!

I just finished reading this novel with a scary cliffhanger… and I'm ecstatic!
With Fable of happiness debuts the new dark contemporary series by Pepper Winters. Here in Italy the author's famous for the Indebted Series, which I'd started but not continued... however, when I read the synopis of Fable of happiness a switch went off in my head… and my instincts hit the mark!
In these pages, Pepper Winters takes us on a journey into the intricate secrets of Fable, a sumptuous home, rich in marble and silks, hidden in the woods. A mausoleum of secrets and the lair of a man who is more animal than human. Kassen lives alone, surviving the weather and memories of the past for a long time now. He knows no other life, he doesn't want any other life, if not the one in which he can run free in the forest, undisturbed, far from civilization, from lies, betrayals and violence. Kassen was cursed the day he was born.
On the contrary, Gemma was blessed in every aspect of his life. In work, in the family, in friendships, in success. In everything, except in love.
Gemma is a professional climber, and in search of a virgin place to conquer with the strength of her muscles and her stubbornness, she trepassing the property in Kassen. The rich descriptions of the environment, of the context that made me feel lost in a forest and safe in a self-managed prison. Memories that offer a traumatic and destabilizing glimpse of what Fable once was. A glimpse into who Kassen was first of all, and before Gemma found him. And a precise psychological portrait of the protagonists that leaves you breathless.
Gemma and Kassen are explosive. They're solitudes that collides. They're hate and fear and courage and desire. Gemma's a strong, independent woman, generous but also astute: she wants to live, she wants to return to her family, and she takes every opportunity to win the freedom that the man whose name she doesn't even know has taken away from her.
He didn't just deprive her of her wings. She deprived her of the loneliness of the soul, the dryness of passion, the fear of feeling different.
And Kassen… I'm just saying that he became one of my favorite heroes ever. A tormented, cruel man, barely survived human cruelty, who collides with new emotions that he doesn't understand. Or maybe, he understands them very well, just he just can't accept them. Death, violence, abuse are the only weapons he has, and he also uses them against Gemma.
But if he's the strongest physically, the executioner, the one who dictates the rules ... with a look or a kind word, with an intimate touch, Gemma makes Kassen her prisoner. This breaks him down, and gives him peace and silence after years of nightmares and torments.
