Fiona Cole è una autrice che ho riscoperto nel 2020: mi piace il suo stile di scrittura e il modo in cui tratteggia i personaggi. Le sue storie toccano trope diversi e qualunque lettrice può trovare pane per i propri denti spulciando tra la sua produzione. 

Ad attirarmi verso Blame it on the champagne è stato quel marriage of convenience per il quale, lo sapete, ho un grande debole. E le mie aspettative sono stata stravolte in maniera positiva! Pensavo di leggere di una protagonista che dopo aver esagerato con lo champagne si ritrova sposata al suo capo, un uomo arrogante che non sopporta. 

Invece no: Verana Mariano è una giovane donna che cerca di allontanarsi dal cammino preparato per lei dai suoi genitori. Pur essendo preparata e possedendo le competenze per gestire la società di famiglia, la Mariano Shipping, Vera può contribuire all'eredità familiare solo sposando l'uomo scelto dal padre, e sarà lo sposo a prendere in gestione l'azienda. Per amore delle tradizioni, Verana è pronta a fare quanto necessario. Purtroppo la situazione precipita, e si trova messa alle strette.

A reggerle una mano inaspettata è Nicholas Rush, il suo capo. 

Dopo un inizio non proprio idilliaco, Nico viene a sapere dei guai di Vera e si offre di sposarla per "salvarla". Un contratto prematrimoniale e ognuno avrà ciò che cerca: lei una scappatoia, lui una moglie e una lavoratrice impagabile. Vera accetta, senza sapere che dietro quegli occhi scuri e le labbra troppo sensuali per appartenere a un uomo si nasconde lo sconosciuto con cui ha trascorso una indimenticabile notte di passione. L'ultima che si era concessa prima di sposare un uomo che non ama.

Un romance che mi ha sorpreso. Quando ero certa che la storia prendesse una direzione, ecco che andava dall'altra parte. 

L'autrice sfrutta diversi trope (enemies to lovers, one night stand, marriage of convenience, revenge) in una struttura nuova e sorprendente. Nico e Verana sono caratterizzati benissimo: Vera mi sembra di conoscerla da tutta una vita, possiede la tenacia e la forza di una donna in carriera, ma anche la dolcezza e la gentilezza di una persona che sta crescendo e sta imparando a capire il proprio valore. Mentre Nico ha un evoluzione pazzesca, un hero così sfaccettato che vi farà innamorare anche quando dovreste prenderlo a ceffoni.

Pur essendoci una forte chimica tra i due, il sesso (e che sesso!) non è la causa scatenante di tutto: in questo caso il passaggio dall'odio all'amore è gestito alla grande, senza strafare e senza infiocchettamenti, cosa che ho apprezzato tantissimo.

L'unico punto scricchiolante, se proprio devo cercare il pelo nell'uovo, per me è stata l'ostinazione al matrimonio imposto dai genitori di Verana, forzata per il fatto che i Mariano sono di origine italiana (va bene le tradizioni, ma qui è veramente fuori dal mondo). 

Fantastiche poi le amiche della protagonista, Raelynn e Nova, una girl gang pronta a difendersi e sostenersi nonostante i diversi caratteri. Non vedo l'ora di leggere la storia di Raelynn, anche se pare che sarà Naughty Nova la protagonista del secondo standalone della Blame it on the alcohol series. A me è piaciuta e vi consiglio di recuperarla se siete in cerca di un romance fresco che vi stupisca a ogni pagina. Da leggere!

Fiona Cole is an author I rediscovered in 2020: I like her writing style and the way she portrays her characters. Blame it on the champagne is a marriage of convenience romance for which, you know, I have a soft spot. And my expectations have been positively distorted! I thought I was reading about a protagonist who, after overdoing the champagne, finds herself married to her boss, an arrogant man who she can't stand. But no: Verana Mariano is a young woman who tries to get away from the path prepared for her by her parents. Despite possessing the skills to manage the family company, the Mariano Shipping, Vera can contribute to the family inheritance only by marrying the man chosen by her father, and the groom will take over the company. For the sake of the traditions, Verana is ready to do what is necessary. Unfortunately the situation worsened, and she found herself cornered.

But there's Nicholas Rush holding an unexpected hand.

After a not exactly idyllic start between the two, Nico learns of Vera's troubles and offers to marry her to "save her". A prenuptial contract and everyone will have what they are looking for: she a loophole, he a wife and a priceless worker. Vera accepts, not knowing that behind those dark eyes and lips too sensual to belong to a man, hides the stranger with whom she spent an unforgettable night of passion. The last she had allowed herself before marrying a man she doesn't love.

A romance that surprised me. When I was sure that the story took one direction, here it went the other way. The author uses several tropes (enemies to lovers, one night stand, marriage of convenience, revenge) in a new and surprising structure. Nico and Verana are characterized very well: Vera has the tenacity and strength of a career woman, but also the sweetness and kindness of a person who is growing up and is learning to understand her own worth. Nico has a crazy evolution, a hero so multifaceted that he will make you fall in love even when you should be slapping him.

Although there is a strong chemistry between the two, the sex (and what a sex!) is not the trigger for the love story: in this case the transition from hatred to love is managed great, without overdoing it and without bowing, which I have greatly appreciated.

The only creaking point, if I really have to nitpick, for me was the obstinacy to the marriage imposed by Verana's dad, forced by the fact that the Marianos are of Italian origin (traditions are fine, but here it's truly out of this world). Fantastic the friends of the protagonist, Raelynn and Nova, a girl gang ready to defend and support themselves despite their different characters. I can't wait to read Raelynn's story, even if it seems that Naughty Nova will be the protagonist of the second standalone of the Blame it on the alcohol series. 

I liked BIOTC and I advise you to retrieve it if you are looking for a fresh romance that amazes you on every page. A must read!
