“He turned his head and our eyes met, the untamed lust weaving through the air.

“Fuck,” he groaned. I blinked in confusion, wondering what was the matter when in the next instance, he shot across four lanes to take the exit. His tires screeched, taking a right and another left and he pulled over next to an empty building, right under the large weeping willow tree.

Glancing around, I scanned the area and all the while my pulse thundered in my ears.

“What are we doing here?” I questioned him, my heart beating hard under my chest.

The sound of a zipper inside of the car had me whipping my head his way and my mouth just about dropped. His big, thick cock sprung out of his pants and Vasili’s big hand wrapped around him.

La folla si accalcava, impaurita ma curiosa. Da tempo attendevano quel giorno: finalmente la malasorte se ne sarebbe andata dal paese e la sciagura avrebbe smesso di perseguitarli.

Cinque gatti randagi, magri e pieni di pulci, giravano intorno alla catasta di legna e paglia ammucchiata contro un palo al centro della piazza. Uno di loro aveva una zampa rotta, si trascinava miagolando così forte da fare accapponare la pelle.

Anche i bambini erano curiosi di vedere la strega bruciare sul rogo; tenevano strette le loro corone d’aglio e si fingevano impavidi. In verità avevano paura e mai e poi mai avrebbero guardato la strega negli occhi, neanche con la collana d’aglio stretta fra le mani.

Dal fondo della piazza apparvero due uomini che trainavano un carretto, e i boati della folla aumentarono. Ecco la strega!

Nella confusione un bambino cadde a terra e fu calpestato da tre persone che nemmeno se ne accorsero. Era il delirio. Uomini e donne gridavano e maledivano la strega; erano in tanti, quella era la loro forza oltre all’aglio.

Lei era lì, sopra quel carro che avanzava lentamente verso la morte, chiusa in una gabbia di ferro. Nonostante fosse legata, incuteva ancora paura. Il neo di fianco all’occhio sinistro e gli indomabili capelli rossi erano un chiaro segno del suo essere demoniaco; anche la sua invidiabile bellezza era motivo di accusa. Nonostante fosse stanca, spossata e indebolita dalle percosse subite, aveva uno sguardo che catturava le persone. Tanti uomini, troppi, si erano innamorati di lei e avevano compiuto adulterio verso le loro mogli.

Mentre il carretto passava, la gente stringeva le collane d’aglio, faceva scongiuri e invocava i santi. Nessuno guardava quella misera ragazza negli occhi. Nessuno ne aveva il coraggio.

La fanciulla piangeva, scrutava la folla alla ricerca di un volto compassionevole, ma nessuno faceva nulla. Se ne stavano lì con le loro belle collane d’aglio, tutti le avevano!

Il carretto raggiunse il centro della piazza, dove c’era la catasta di legna. Un uomo aprì la gabbia e la folla strattonò giù la fanciulla. Più persone la trascinarono sul rogo e le avvinghiarono polsi, caviglie e busto al palo.

Prima di appiccare il fuoco, un uomo prese la parola davanti alla fiumana di gente, che si zittì per ascoltarlo.

«Carissimi amici, ricorderemo questa data come il giorno della liberazione. Finalmente la strega brucerà all’inferno!».

Un boato di acclamazioni fece eco alle sue parole.

«Evviva il forestiero che ci ha salvato!».

«La Regina Rossa ha finito di compiere misfatti». L’uomo alzò la fiaccola in aria. «Questa donna è il demonio!».

«Bruciamola subito!».

«No!», gridò la ragazza. «Vi prego, lasciatemi andare!».

«Tu sei una strega!», urlò un bambino in prima fila. «E le streghe bruciano sul rogo!».

La ragazza lo fissò e lui si affrettò ad abbassare lo sguardo, stringendo più forte la collana d’aglio che portava al collo.

«Sì, le streghe come te bruciano sul rogo», incalzò un’altra voce.

Il destino della giovane era ormai segnato. 

Il miagolare stridulo dei gatti, soprattutto di quello con la zampa rotta, si librava nell’aria. Presto anche la strega avrebbe urlato. La sua sarebbe stata una morte lenta e atroce.

«Uccidetemi subito, vi prego!». La giovane si agitava per liberarsi dalle corde che le incidevano la pelle. «Bruciatemi dopo!».

«L’anima di una strega deve bruciare insieme al suo corpo», dichiarò l’uomo che teneva alta la fiaccola.

Il fragore della folla raggiunse picchi altissimi e coprì il pianto della fanciulla.

Quando l’uomo avvicinò la fiaccola alla catasta di legna, la giovane gridò. Il fuoco sfiorò appena il pagliericcio e le prime fiamme si trasformarono in avide mani pronte ad agguantare ogni cosa. Le urla della ragazza divennero isteriche. Non sentiva male, non ancora, solo un po’ di calore, ma la paura era ormai fuori controllo. Si dimenava osservando la paglia ardere sotto i suoi piedi scalzi, si divincolava come un serpente per sfuggire al fuoco. Non voleva che le fiamme si impossessassero di lei. Quello strattonare violento le lacerò la pelle delle caviglie e dei polsi. L’ispida corda si tinse di rosso.

Le fiamme danzavano intorno alla giovane e si allungavano per afferrarle i calcagni. Ardevano dal desiderio di abbracciarla e diventare un tutt’uno con lei.

La folla assisteva muta, impassibile. Ormai le urla della ragazza e il miagolare dei gatti erano gli unici strazianti rumori della piazza.

In sporadici momenti di lucidità, la ragazza si guardava in giro alla ricerca di un’àncora di salvezza, ma nessuno aveva pietà di lei.

Le fiamme raggiunsero i suoi piedi e iniziarono a tormentarli, presero coraggio e si avvilupparono intorno alle cosce fino all’inguine. Il vestito si incendiò. Le lingue di fuoco si eccitarono, prede di una frenesia divoratrice che le aizzava a spingersi sempre più in alto. Scalpitavano come cavalli impazziti, galoppavano sul corpo della fanciulla, bramose di fondersi con lei. La accarezzavano con passione ardente: volevano entrare in lei, possederla fino al suo ultimo respiro. All’odore di fumo si mischiò quello acre di carne bruciata.

Le grida diventarono disumane.

La strega stava bruciando viva.

L'AUTRICE

Cristina Vichi vive a Riccione, insieme al marito e tre figli. Ha sempre amato molto inventare storie, ma dopo la stesura del primo romanzo la scrittura diventa una passione vera e propria. L’incontro con la Editor Emanuela Navone è illuminante, perché le permette di sperimentare l’universo della scrittura con maggior consapevolezza e nuovi stimoli. Quando si conclude un romanzo non conta solo il risultato in sé, ma soprattutto il percorso che l’autore ha compiuto per arrivare a mettere la parola fine alla sua opera.
