Non vedevo l'ora di ritornare a leggere la storia di Kassen e Gemma, soprattutto dopo quel cliffhanger da paurissima che l'autrice ha messo su (o giù, suona decida meglio giù) nel Book One.
Che dire? Di solito il secondo volume di una trilogia soffre del fatto appunto di essere il secondo tronco di una narrazione unica; stavolta, invece, non si avverte nessuno stacco, il ritmo procede in alto, alto, alto, senza mai un cedimento, un punto morto, un passaggio noioso.
Sono Kassen e Gemma il focus di tutto il libro. La loro attrazione esplosiva. Perversa. Sono già oltre le dinamiche di carnefice e vittima.
La loro unione avviene per forza di cose. Il loro essere nemici. Io loro desiderare cose opposte. Il loro desiderare l'altro, e il desiderare una vita assieme, oppure una vita dove non si sono mai incontrati.
Il valore indiscusso è la cura e la dettagliata attenzione alla psicologia dei due protagonisti. L'autrice è stata veramente sublime. Scaviamo nel passato di Kassen, a quando Fable era abitata da lui, i mostri veri e la sua piccola famiglia. Ogni ricordo mi ha strappato il cuore, così come straccia quello di Gemma. Gemma, indipendente e fiera che è ormai legata, schiava di quell'uomo frammentato, orgoglioso, testardo, fragile e indomabile.
"Happiness,” he breathed. “I wished for happiness.”
Due anime che se si fossero trovate in un contesto diverso, più civile, meno malvagio, avrebbero potuto creare una favola... ma Fable non si può cancellare. Non si possono nascondere gli orrori, i traumi che hanno macchiato in maniera indissolubile il passato di Kassen, e che mandano in crash il suo presente, ora che coinvolge anche Gemma.
Una storia che mi ha dato una biglietto in prima classe per delle emozioni vivide e viscerali che non credevo delle pagine potessero regalarmi. Non solo per i rapporti tra i protagonisti, ma anche per il contesto in cui sono inseriti, quasi un Eden infernale che persino lucifero ha deciso di abbandonare. Lui no, Kassen non è pronto per uscirne. E Gemma non vuole, non può abbandonarlo a se stesso.
Ovviamente anche questo libro termina con un finale che lascia ancora spazio per sconvolgenti novità e per tutte quelle risposte che ancora mancano in quest'intreccio pazzesco. Assolutamente da leggere!

I couldn't wait to go back to Kassen and Gemma, especially after that scary cliffhanger that the author put up (or down, sounds better down) in Book One.
What to say? Usually the second volume of a trilogy suffers from the fact that it's the second block of a single narrative; this time, however, there's no detachment, the rhythm proceeds high, high, high, without a dead point or a boring passage.
Kassen and Gemma are the focus of the whole book. Their explosive, perverse attraction. They're already beyond the dynamics of executioner and victim. A union that happens by force of circumstances. They're enemies. They crave opposite things. They're longing for each other, and they're longing for a life together or a life where they have never met.
The undisputed value's the care and detailed attention to the psychology of the two protagonists. The author was truly sublime. Kassen's past, back to when Fable was inhabited by him, the real monsters and his little family, oh my. Every memory tore my heart out, just as it tore Gemma's. Gemma, independent and proud woman, a slave for that fragmented, proud, stubborn, fragile and indomitable man.
"ʜᴀᴘᴘɪɴᴇꜱꜱ,” ʜᴇ ʙʀᴇᴀᴛʜᴇᴅ. “ɪ ᴡɪꜱʜᴇᴅ ꜰᴏʀ ʜᴀᴘᴘɪɴᴇꜱꜱ.”
Two souls that, if they found themselves in a different, more civilized anc less evil context, could be a fairy tale one... but Fable cannot be canceled. The traumas that have indissolubly stained Kassen's past, and what crash his present, can't be erase, and now they involves Gemma.
A story that gave me a first-class ticket of vivid and lived emotions that I didn't believe books can give to me. Not only for the relationships between the protagonists, but also for the context in which they're inserted, almost an infernal Eden that even Lucifer has decided to abandon. Not him, Kassen isn't ready to get out. And Gemma doesn't want to get out without him. She can't leave him to himself.
Obviously, this book also ends with a cliffhanger that still leaves room for shocking news and for all those questions that need answerws in this crazy plot. A must read indeed!
